Dendrology and Vegetation Science

Woody plant species are important structural elements of forest ecosystems. For research and teaching, we collect and process empirical data on the biology of woody plant species (genetics, physiology, morphology, ecology). Our goal is to get a solid basic knowledge on all woody plant species and their natural phytosociological communities of temperate forests in Central Europe.

• Guide for the identification of 160 woody plant species
• E-Learning-tool for the identification of 160 woody plant species
• Online GIS-database for practical training of identification of woody plant species (DendroDB)

• Ecological parameters with consistent rankings of 80 woody plant species (parameters for modeling)
• Generalized distribution maps of all native tree and shrub species
• Generalized ecograms of all native tree species
• Steadiness and abundance of all native tree species in phytosociological communities

We advise forest practice and in applied projects and mandates we cover the following dendrology and vegetation science related topics and aspects:

• SEBA: Forest biodiversity projects on the promotion of rare tree species (distribution, population structure, conservation strategy)
• FGR GCU: Forest genetic ressources projects on gene conservation units (genetic structure, establishment of conservation units)
• EUFORGEN/EUFGIS: National coordinator and focal point mandates (network, database)
• CASTANEA: Sweet chestnut selva restoration and sweet chestnut varieties conservation partner projects (agroforestry systems, agricultural genetic ressources)
• WALAB: ETH coordinator mandate and common garden experiment projects (arboretum, species/provenance trials, general monitoring database)
